As I mentioned earlier, I have conducted over a hundred reviews of troubled projects. When I do this, there are typically 10 to 20 people in the review meeting, sometimes more. Most are members of the project being reviewed, but many are managers or other project managers sitting in to learn tips they can use on their projects. Imagine what it was like for me when I first began reviewing troubled projects.

• I know less than anyone in the room about the project

• My ability to be a quick study (or not) is on display

• My credibility as a project reviewer is on the line

• There is the potential that some people will be embarrassed in front of their peers and management

• I am often working with people who mistakenly think I am out to make them look bad and, therefore, they can withdraw or be defensive
